Roger Emmerson will expand on this question from the points of view of the Scottish people, Scotland, history, art and architecture. He will present a possible answer derived from folklore, colloquialism, philosophy, art criticism and architecture. He will seek to justify this by examining how several buildings in Edinburgh satisfy the proposition.
Roger Emmerson trained as an architect in Edinburgh and Glasgow and has worked in architectural conservation, housing, education and the leisure industries. From 1987 – 99, he taught architecture at Edinburgh College of Art and served as a visiting lecturer at the universities of Venice, Lisbon, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Berkeley. He is the author of four books and numerous writings on Scottish architecture.
