Edinburgh and the Cockburn Association in the Inter-War Years

Speaker - Professor Cliff Hague

This year is the 150th anniversary of foundation of The Cockburn Association. It is the oldest amenity association in the UK and a book will be published in 2025 covering the diverse environmental and planning issues in which the Cockburn Association has been involved since 1875. Cliff Hague has been instrumental in shaping this edited volume.

Cliff Hague is a British town planning practitioner and was Professor of Planning and Spatial Development at Heriot Watt University. He was President of the Royal Town Planning Institute (2006), and President of the Commonwealth Association of Planners (2000 to 2006), and its Secretary General from 2006-10. He was Chairman of the Built Environment Forum Scotland (2011-14), and Chairman of the Cockburn Association (2016-23). One of his many books, Leading Change: Delivering the New Urban Agenda Through Urban and Territorial Planning (2018) provides key frameworks for a sustainable urban future (free download). The geographical range of Cliff Hague’s published work on planning extends beyond Britain to many European countries, the Middle East, and South East Asia.

His contribution to planning was acknowledged by his membership of the Academic of Social Sciences and by the award of an OBE in the 2016 birthday honours list.
